Icon of the 1960s, the lovely British actress Julie Christie was born in India and spent her childhood in England and Wales, the daughter of a tea planter and a painter. Standing at 5'2" and dubbed by Al Pacino as "the most poetic of all actresses," her talent and luminous screen presence is one that continues to enchant viewers today. Smitten by the bohemian life of artists, Julie planned on becoming one herself before enrolling in London's Central School of Speech Training. Breaking into acting with a 1961 science-fiction BBC production called A for Andromeda, she then went on to play roles in films such as The Fast Lady (1962), Billy Liar (1963), and in 1965 she was cast in Doctor Zhivago, the film which would soar her to international acclaim at the age of 24.
Romantically involved with actor Warren Beatty for seven years, from 1967-1973, they co-starred in Robert Altman's McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971), the 1975 classic Shampoo, and Heaven Can Wait in 1978. The two had remained remained good friends even after their split, with Beatty describing her as "the most beautiful and at the same time the most nervous person I had ever known." In 2007, Julie quietly married her longtime partner, journalist Duncan Campbell, at the age of 66. It was her first marriage and an act that surprised even some of her closest friends, as she'd always maintained that marriage was never an option for her. Since the 1970s she has owned a farm in Wales, and is active in various causes including animal rights, environmental protection and the anti-nuclear power movement.
