Because I am jetting south to Peru tomorrow, I thought I'd share some pictures of a bygone era in commercial air travel, the glamourous heyday of the mid-late sixties, when flying was an event to get dressed up for!
Hostesses or Stewardesses, as they were known in the pre-politically correct days of the "Flight Attendant," wore some seriously wild (and often seriously racy) mod uniforms! The airline Braniff International took things above and beyond to new heights, as it were (ha ha), when they hired designers Emilio Pucci and later Halston to create the colorful flight uniforms and accessories, even the airplane seats! I'm also a fan of the old airline bags - squared off with white piping, in every color of the rainbow. My mother worked for Korean Airlines in the '70s, and thanks to her practical sense to keep a couple of her old bags around, I still enjoy them today. And you have to love those space-age bubble helmets, worn to protect the coifs of all those stylish Stewardesses out on the windy runways. Don't forget to throw in smoking anywhere on the plane, complimentary meals regardless of flight duration, and as many cocktails as you'd like... and there you have it, a vintage airline adventure.
