Today I'm making it up with some snapshots
of this darling little lady and yé-yé princess,
France Gall herself.
With her first single recorded at the age of 16,
and winning the Eurovision contest in 1965 for her song "Poupée de cire, poupée de son," when she was just 18, France suffered a bit of a problem later on for her teenage naïveté after she realized she'd been singing many songs (often written by Serge Gainsbourg - surprise, surprise!) with double meanings that fell on the dirty side of the street. In the Gainsbourg-penned "Les sucettes" (Lollipops), for instance, she sings what translates as: Annie loves lollipops, aniseed lollipops/ When the sweet liquid runs down her throat, Annie is in paradise.
Sacrebleu!!!
Gall said that she had sung Gainsbourg's songs "with an innocence of which I'm proud. I was pained to then learn that he had turned the situation to his advantage, mocking me." In a 2001 television interview, Gall said that she felt "betrayed by the adults around me."
Anyway, to France we go!
