Rita Lee, Queen of Brazilian Rock

Rita Lee was born in São Paulo, Brazil, in December 1947 to a North American father and a mother of Italian ancestry. She is most well known for her time with the band Os Mutantes (the mutants), a psychedelic rock group - also linked with the Brazilian Tropicália movement - that was formed in 1966 with Arnaldo Baptista and Sérgio Dias. Rita left Os Mutantes in 1972, focusing on on solo work and playing with a group called Tutti Frutti, which would eventually become her backing band.
Today she continues to be a popular figure in Brazilian entertainment (hosting radio and talk shows as well as writing children's books), where she is also known as a vegetarian and animal rights activist.
